Almost no plot and very little dialog, this is the production that McQueen poured his heart into. So much so that it bankrupted him. He set out to make a movie purely about the race and racing and he succeeded admirably. But it was not well received at the box office - presumably because it only appealed to lovers of Grand Prix racing.
