Thunder in Carolina DVD - Rory Calhoun ~ Alan Hale - Rare 1960 NASCAR film - Southern 500 [Region Free DVD] |
|
| |
Considered by some to be the grand-daddy of NASCAR style films. It was filmed in and around Darlingtion SC, the home of the Southern 500.
Rory Calhoun is down on his luck driver Mitch Cooper who hooks up with Les York (John "Race" Gentry) and his wife Rena played by newcomer Connie Hines. Alan Hale of Gilligan's Island plays "Buddy" a one-armed pit crew chief.
Les wants to become a winning driver so Mitch tutors him in his '57 Chevy stocker that Les and Mitch have rebuilt after the wreck that injured Mitch. In his first practice run around the hills of North Carolina, Les tries to lose a "revenuer" looking for moonshine runners.
Les begins to tear up the circuit but becomes infatuated with a race track groupie causing problems with Rena. But never fear - Mitch is busy putting the moves on Rena who almost falls for his charm.
Mitch and Les have a falling out and end up competing in the Southern 500 at Darlington.
The acting is questionable and the story line a bit cornball but this movie is a must see for any NASCAR fan.
Viewing quality of this hard to find film is excellent - much better than one would expect for a 40 something year old film. It is shipped in a plastic case with the artwork as shown.
